As announced earlier this summer (2014), we are providing additional information on the enhanced ACT® writing test that will be introduced in fall 2015. The changes to the writing test, as with all of our solutions, are driven by research and evidence. These modifications are the result of a decade of unique insight and experience, and are reflective of our commitment to continuous improvement. The ACT writing test will continue to give all students the opportunity to demonstrate their readiness to meet the writing demands of college and career.

While the current ACT writing test is an exercise in classic persuasion, the enhanced writing test will present students with a rhetorical purpose that is more broadly argumentative. It is designed to better measure students’ ability to evaluate multiple perspectives on a complex issue and to generate an argument based on reasoning, knowledge, and experience. In this way, the enhanced test enables students to more fully demonstrate the writing skills and abilities they will need in college and the workforce.

ACT previously announced enhancements to the ACT® test beginning in September 2015 that include modifications to the writing test and the inclusion of new readiness scores and indicators. These enhancements will require minor modification to the ACT score reports. The 2015–2016 sample score reports are now available.

  Intelligent Machines

Many of the goods and services we depend on daily are now supplied by intelligent, automated machines rather than human beings. Robots build cars and other goods on assembly lines, where once there were human workers. Many of our phone conversations are now conducted not with people but with sophisticated technologies. We can now buy goods at a variety of stores without the help of a human cashier. Automation is generally seen as a sign of progress, but what is lost when we replace humans with machines? Given the accelerating variety and prevalence of intelligent machines, it is worth examining the implications and meaning of their presence in our lives.

Read and carefully consider these perspectives. Each suggests a particular way of thinking about the increasing presence of intelligent machines.

Perspective One: What we lose with the replacement of people by machines is some part of our own humanity. Even our mundane daily encounters no longer require from us basic courtesy, respect, and tolerance for other people.

Perspective Two: Machines are good at low-skill, repetitive jobs, and at high-speed, extremely precise jobs. In both cases they work better than humans. This efficiency leads to a more prosperous and progressive world for everyone.

Perspective Three: Intelligent machines challenge our long-standing ideas about what humans are or can be. This is good because it pushes both humans and machines toward new, unimagined possibilities.

  Essay Task

Write a unified, coherent essay in which you evaluate multiple perspectives on the increasing presence of intelligent machines. In your essay, be sure to:

  • analyze and evaluate the perspectives given

  • state and develop your own perspective on the issue

  • explain the relationship between your perspective and those given

Your perspective may be in full agreement with any of the others, in partial agreement, or wholly different. Whatever the case, support your ideas with logical reasoning and detailed, persuasive examples.

Students will continue to receive a single subject-level writing score with a score range of 1 to 36. Additionally, students will receive scores for four important domains of writing competency, each scored and reported on a 2 to 12 scale:

  · Ideas and analysis

  · Development and support

  · Organization

  · Language use and conventions

As is the case today, the writing test will remain optional and the writing score will not affect the 1–36 ACT Composite score.
