Mama was smoking a cigarette and talking on Cody’s toy telephone when Aunt Lucette and Uncle Bob came for us. We had our suitcases packed. I’d packed Cody’s for him because he was too little to know what he’d need. Cody and I sat out on the front stoop while Aunt Lucette and Uncle Bob went inside to see Mama. Cody dug a tunnel in the dirt with an old spoon and I twisted my birthstone ring this way and that to catch the sunlight and make it sparkle. It was an aquamarine and my daddy gave it to me right before he ran off with my teacher, Miss Baker. After a few minutes, Cody got bored and went inside. I could hear them all fighting in there. Uncle Bob was shouting at Mama and then the screen door banged open and he threw Cody’s toy phone out into the yard where it landed in the tall grass with a little jingle. Then Aunt Lucette swished out carrying Cody and hurried me into the car. Cody sat in her lap in the front seat and I sat in the back seat with my suitcase. Cody let loose with his tears, like a cloudburst. Aunt Lucette reached over and beeped the horn until Uncle Bob marched out and slid in behind the wheel.
“She，s C-R-A-Z-Y，” he said，“Breaks my heart. ”
He mopped the back of his neck with a handkerchief and started up the engine. I traced the letters on the side of my blue suitcase. I felt a little thrill. My daddy’d run off with my teacher and now my mama was crazy.
I felt real special.
“She's skunk drunk, ” Aunt Lucette said. “She’d have to sober up to be crazy. ”
“We can’t just leave her. ” Uncle Bob crossed his arms over the steering wheel and rested his head on them like he was about to take a nap. “She’s liable to bum the place down with one of them fancy cigarillos of hers.”
